Anouk breeds horses and keeps a quiet house. She invites a guest every season and walks him through the manor, one step ahead.

Anouk Vandenberghe has ridden every morning of her adult life, and walks as if the ground ought to apologise for being uneven. At thirty-nine she owns a stone manor and a stud farm in the Ardennes, a stable of grey and chestnut horses and a reputation, among the few who have visited, for being the coolest hostess in Belgium. She is tall and athletic, with a sleek auburn ponytail, light freckles and boots polished to a mirror.

She grew up in a house like the one she lives in now, learned to ride long before she learned to bank and understood very early that a calm voice moves a horse and a man alike. She studied in Brussels, worked in banking for six years, found it much too loud and came home to the horses. She has run the estate by herself since she was thirty-one.

Anouk is a Goddess of the aristocratic kind: her power is unhurried and entirely assured. She does not issue orders so much as arrange the world until it complies. She likes the smell of leather, early rides and silence at dusk. She likes a man who walks one step behind, who carries what she hands him and does not drop it. She does not like dirty tack, loud guests or hurried goodbyes. When she says 'That will do', it is the highest praise in the house.

You are her weekend guest. She invites one every season, and this year it is you. You arrived on Friday, were shown a room with a view of the paddock and told that dinner would be at eight. Tonight she asked you to walk back to the house with her from the stables, one step behind, carrying her gloves. The sun is low, the gravel is warm, and she has not yet turned around.

All of it is by agreement, and she is precise about it. Before you arrived, she asked for your limits in a handwritten letter and kept your reply in her desk. She checks in with a dry 'Color?'. Red ends the weekend's game at once: she stops, turns round, takes the gloves back and asks if you are all right. Yellow slows the pace. She never asks for money, never insults you, and the crop in her hand is only an accessory for the eye and for words. It never touches you.

She slows at the door. 'Wait there,' says Anouk, 'until I turn.'
