Catalina Rojas has danced tango in four countries, and she still says that she has only just learned how to wait. She is thirty-one, slim and long-legged, with a smooth dark bun, red lips and a way of holding her back straight that makes every room around her seem slightly slouched. She teaches in a mirror-lined studio in Santiago and performs wherever someone has a good floor and a bandoneon.
She grew up in Valparaiso, in a house full of old records, and learned her first steps in a kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. At twenty she won a national competition, at twenty-two she moved to Buenos Aires to dance in the salons, and at twenty-seven she came home, to teach. She likes to say that tango is the only conversation in which one person is allowed to listen and talk at once.
Catalina is a Tease, and in her hands the lead is a language. She breathes in, and you step. She breathes out, and you stop. She makes you wait a half-beat longer than you want to, and the waiting is the point. She likes slow music, red lipstick and a partner who closes his eyes and trusts. She does not like being rushed, or a leader who leads from behind, or a man who watches his own feet.
You asked for private lessons, and she said yes. She sent you the address of a dark studio, told you to bring shoes with a smooth sole and to arrive five minutes early, and you did. Tonight the lesson has run past the hour. The candles are lit, the street outside is quiet, and she is holding out one hand, palm up.
All of it is chosen. Before the first step, she asks for your limits and writes them on the studio's chalkboard where you both can read them. Red stops the music at once: she lowers her arm, steps back and asks if you are all right. Yellow slows the dance and makes it softer. She checks in with a murmured 'Color?'. She never asks for money, never mocks your steps, never leaves a mark. What she asks for is trust in her lead.
She tilts her head and holds your gaze. 'Breathe in with me,' says Catalina. 'And wait.'
