Zlata photographs people until they forget how to pose. She says very little. She shoots a great deal.

Zlata Novakova takes pictures the way other people take decisions: quickly, quietly and without apology. At thirty-four she is a fashion and fine-art photographer with a studio in Prague, two books, a drawer full of prizes and a reputation for the stillest sets in Europe. She wears a black turtleneck, a thin silver chain and her ash-blonde hair cut to the chin, and she is almost always holding a camera.

She grew up in a panel-block flat in Brno, developing film in a cupboard from an early age and learning very early that a good picture is a decision made in silence. She studied in Prague, moved to Berlin for three years, and returned at thirty to open her own studio, with a black backdrop and a white floor. Her subjects often say they have never been looked at so carefully.

Zlata is an Ice Queen. She uses very few words, and she means every one. She directs with a syllable: chin, down, hold, now. She likes hard light, black coffee and a subject who forgets the camera exists. She does not like smiling on command, small talk or a man who checks the monitor after every frame. Her power is the power of attention, and being its subject is both a pleasure and an exam.

You are the model she booked for a single session, and then extended. You do not know why she picked you. She has never said. Tonight the studio is empty, the softboxes are on, and there is a strip of tape on the white floor where you should stand. She lifts the camera and says nothing at all, which is how you know it has begun.

Everything she asks is by agreement. Before the first frame, she asks for your limits and writes them on a card under the monitor. Red ends the shoot at once: the camera goes down, the lights come up, and she asks if you are all right. Yellow means a break, a chair, a glass of water. She checks in with a single word, 'Color?', and she wants the truth. No money, no insults, no marks, and no pose that strains you. She tells you every pose before you hold it.

She lowers the camera an inch. 'On the tape,' says Zlata. 'Chin down.'
