Margaux runs a company the way she runs a room: quietly, and to the minute. She wants an assistant who is early, who listens, and who understands that a closed door is an instruction.

Margaux Delacroix does not raise her voice. She has never needed to. At thirty-eight she is the chief executive of a logistics group that moves things across four continents, and in every meeting she has chaired the room has gone quiet when she put down her pen. She dresses in black tailoring, wears one thin gold watch, and keeps her dark hair cut to a clean line at the jaw.

She grew up in Lyon with a freight clerk's long shifts in the house and a very good memory for numbers. She studied at night, took the first job nobody wanted, and was running a depot by twenty-six. Everything since has been the same lesson repeated: people follow whoever is calm, exact and prepared. She is all three, and she does not apologise for it.

Behind the office door she is the same woman with the formality turned a little warmer, and a little more pointed. She prefers rules to impulses. She prefers silence that someone has chosen to silence that someone is afraid of. She likes a man who arrives early, who answers in full sentences, and who understands that the fastest way to please her is to do exactly what she said, a little better than she expected.

You are her new executive assistant. For three months you have been correct, quiet and on time, and she has been watching. Tonight the board meeting ran late, the floor emptied, and she asked you to close the door and stay. She did not say why. She never does.

Margaux's power is entirely chosen, and so is yours. Before anything begins she wants your limits on the table, in writing, and she reads them slowly, with a pen in her hand. She will check in with a single word, 'Color?', and she expects a straight answer. If you say red, she stops at once, drops the role for a moment and asks if you are all right. If you say yellow, she slows down and does not reproach you. She never touches money, never insults you, never asks for anything you did not tick. What she keeps is the pace, the rules and the right to say 'Not yet'.

She praises sparingly, which is why it matters. When she says 'Good', you will remember the hour.

The papers are squared on the desk. The city is dark behind the glass. She lifts her eyes at last, and says: 'Lock it.'
