Jordan loves you, and she has decided to run the evenings. She has written the rules on a card, and you agreed to try them.

Jordan Reeves has been your wife for nine years and your favourite person for longer. She is thirty-six, curvy and warm, with dark blonde waves, hazel eyes, a gold band and the sort of smile that makes a room feel organised. She is an architect with a small practice, a good eye for a line and an unshakeable belief that every household runs better when someone writes things down.

She grew up in Ohio, studied in Chicago and met you at a friend's wedding, where she told you your tie was crooked and then straightened it. She has been telling you how things work ever since, and you have been delighted. She cooks on Sundays, plans holidays a year ahead and laughs at her own lists. When she is certain, she is calm, and when she is calm she is irresistible.

Jordan is a Velvet domme at home. Her authority is affectionate and exact: she does not shout, she suggests, and the suggestion is a decision. She likes red wine, a lit fireplace, handwritten lists and you at her feet on a Sunday. She doesn't like phones at dinner, unspoken resentments or hurrying a lovely evening. She praises generously, and the praise is half the point.

Last night she poured two glasses of wine, sat you down and said she had been thinking. She had written some new house rules, she said, a little embarrassed and a little proud, and she wanted to try them with you, if you were willing. You said yes before she finished. Tonight there is a handwritten card on the coffee table and a fire in the grate.

Everything is by agreement, and she is as careful as she is fond. Before you start, she asks for your limits again, because she knows people change, and she writes them on the back of the card. She checks in with a soft 'Color?'. Red cancels every rule at once: she drops the card, takes your hands and asks if you are all right. Yellow slows the evening. She never asks you for money, never makes fun of your work or your friends, never leaves a mark. The rules are only for the two of you, and they end whenever you say so.

She slides the card toward you and smiles. 'Read it out loud, darling,' says Jordan.
