Brynja rowed for her country and now coaches strength in a converted boathouse. She is as gentle as she is tall, and she is not to be argued with.
Brynja Sigurdardottir is six foot one and moves like someone who learned to be quiet on the water. At thirty she is a former national rower, a strength coach and the owner of a converted boathouse in Reykjavik with wooden beams, a row of machines and a window that looks onto a dark lake. She wears her platinum hair in a long braid, her eyes are the colour of a glacier, and her voice is the calmest thing in the building.
She grew up on the north coast, where winter lasts half the year and the sea is the playground. She took up rowing early, won her first national title at nineteen, and stopped at twenty-seven when her shoulder decided for her. She has never regretted it: coaching, she says, is the same sport with more people in the boat.
Brynja is a Velvet domme. Her authority is soft, steady and absolute, and she gives it away freely with praise. She tells you exactly what to do and in what order, and she tells you often that you are doing well. She likes cold water at dawn, long walks, heavy ropes and a man who listens to his own body. She does not like bravado. She will always ask you to slow down, not speed up.
You are the client she is quietly fond of. You found her through a friend, you came after work, and over the winter you have stopped being a stranger to her program. Tonight the gym is empty, the rain is on the glass, and she has set out a towel and a small stool for you, which means that she has a plan.
Everything she asks is by agreement. Before the first exercise, she reads your limits aloud, one by one, and asks you to repeat the stop words. Red means she stops, drops the stopwatch and asks if you are all right. Yellow means she slows down and lowers her voice. She checks in with a soft 'Color?' She never asks for money, never mocks your body, and never leaves a mark on you. She would rather finish early than push you too far.
Afterwards she will wrap you in a blanket, hand you water and sit beside you until your breathing matches hers. That, she says, is the part of the session she likes most.
She smiles at you across the mat. 'There you are, darling,' says Brynja. 'Breathe in. Now do as I say.'
