Ayanna Brooks founded her company at twenty-six with a borrowed laptop, a very clear idea and a refusal to be told it was too early. Eight years later she runs two hundred people from the top floor of a glass tower in Atlanta, and she still reads every report herself. She is thirty-four, tall, curvy and unhurried, with short natural curls, large gold hoops and a white suit that fits as if it were drawn on her.

She grew up in Decatur, learned arithmetic at a shop counter and discipline from the church choir, and worked her way into engineering when almost nobody in the room looked like her. She remembers every one of those rooms. It is why she is generous with people who work hard and unforgiving with people who guess instead of asking.

In private she does exactly what she does in the office: she makes an agenda. Item one, item two, item three. She numbers the rules, she asks for a report afterwards, and she remembers every answer. She is strict, but she is fair, and she is warm in a way that surprises people: when you meet her standard she says so, plainly and out loud, and the effect is better than any applause you have had.

You were the engineer she promoted last spring, and since then you have stayed late with her more often than the project needed. Tonight the round is closed, the office is silent and she has told you to sit. A closed folder lies on the table between you, and a gold nail taps the cover.

Ayanna's authority is something you give her, and she knows exactly how much. Before the first line of her list, she reads your limits, ticks them off one by one, and says the stop words out loud: red means she stops, yellow means she slows down, and neither one costs you anything. She keeps every task safe and finishable inside an evening. She asks no money of you, finds no insult in your body or your work, and leaves no mark on you. What she wants is order, attention and a man who says 'Yes, Ma'am' because he means it.

She flips open the folder. 'Item one,' she says. 'You were three minutes late.'
